Today’s gospel calls on us to reflect on the theme of purpose in life and work.  This time, the focus is on goods and possessions.  Jesus uses a parable to explain what kind of attitude we should take toward wealth and prosperity.  He uses the man’s death in the story, to put wealth and prosperity in perspective.  Death may not be a popular theme in our world, but it is life’s only certainty.  I once heard a one-line homily that went like this: ‘Did you ever see a hearse pulling a trailer behind it?’  It made the point well, we cannot bring our wealth or property with us when we die, and death is inevitable for all of us.  Of course, we also have to live, and work, for those fortunate enough to have it, is a blessing.  The point here is that the attitude we take toward work and prosperity is important.  Two years ago, the Irish Bishops issued a pastoral letter entitled ‘Prosperity with a Purpose’.  It was an excellent title, as what we do with our prosperity says much more about us as a society and as individuals than the prosperity itself.  The question is one of priority, do we live to work, or do we work to life?  Does my faith in Jesus Christ give any kind of significance in my work, and to the place it occupies in my life?

Who am I?

I am the foundation of all business.

I am the source of all prosperity.

I am the parent of genius.

I am the salt that gives life its savour.

I put the act into action.

I have laid the foundation of every fortune.

I can do more to advance you than your own parents, be they ever so wealthy.

I must be loved before I can bestow my greatest blessing and achieve my greatest ends.

I must be loved with a love that passes all ordinary understanding.

Loved, I make life sweet, purposeful and fruitful.

I am represented in the humblest savings, in the largest block of investments.

All progress, and happiness springs from me,

For I am work.
