VOCATIONS SUNDAY

The word vocation comes from the Latin word vocare which means, “to call.”  Vocation is usually understood as the way of life each of us feels called to follow.  This Sunday is a day of special prayer for vocations to the work of service in the church.  Jesus said “The harvest is rich but the labourers are few so ask the Lord of the harvest to send labourers into his harvest” (Matt. 9:37).  When we pray for vocations we are asking the Lord to send labourers into the harvest.  On this Vocations Sunday we pray that there will be labourers willing to answer the Lord’s call.

Prayer for Vocations

Father,

whose voice verbed the world into being and praise

may your call to service be heard in our days

Jesus,

who revealed in human heart and mind God’s glory

name again people to tell a new age your story

Spirit,

ferment and yeast of God in the bread and wine

Inspire in human hearts the desire to be thine.
