The More Things Change

Relationships alter all the time.  Families coming together after long partings can be surprised by this.  Brothers and sisters can rediscover an adult where they left behind a younger sibling years back, as they sit around a parent’s coffin.

Take our relationship with our parents.  It changes over the years.  As a small child, we see them as the ones who can protect us, who know everything, whom we can trust and depend upon.  They are all mighty.  In adult years, the relationship is more equal: we enjoy each other’s company.  As the years advance, parents age and need more help and support.  Simply being together takes on a joy.

Each of the three stages involves the same individuals.  Yet in terms of relationship they were different persons altogether.

Why shouldn’t the life of God mirror this?  The God in heaven we rely upon (Father).  The same God, but a different person (Son) who came and walked among us.  He died and rose again and lives on amongst us in his Spirit.  He now depends on us to show his presence on earth.

What kind of God do you believe in?  God the supplier, God the companion or God who needs our hands, feet and lips?  Or something of each?

Prayer for those doing exams

Lord,

Pour out your Spirit of wisdom on these students:

Help them to remain calm, to attend carefully to the questions asked, to think clearly, to remember accurately, and to express themselves well.

Grant that they may reflect the best of the work they have done, and the best of the teaching they have received.

Accept their best efforts in these examinations and in the great test of life on earth.

May your love be upon them O Lord as they place all their trust in you.

Amen.
