Is there life after death?  What do you think?  Does an afterlife exist or is this earthly life the only life we have?  Today the word of God challenges us to reflect on death and life after death.

Jesus Christ is living proof of life after death - simply because he rose from the dead - and Christians believe that all people will rise from the dead as Christ rose from the dead.  The resurrection of the dead is central to the teaching of Jesus because he died and rose from the dead so that all people would share in his death and resurrection and gain eternal life.  He has taught us that, even if we die, we always live in him.  That is why Jesus argues in today’s Gospel that God is God, not of the dead, but of the living’  (Luke 20:38).

But Christians also believe that there is a definite connection between human life in this world and life after death.  The two are inextricably linked because we can only enter the next life by dying in this life.  Therefore, death from human life on earth is the doorway to the next life.  It is during our earthly lives that God teaches us about himself and his will for us.  It is during our earthly lives that we learn to know God - who invites us to journey through death to our true home in heaven.
