‘You too must stand ready, because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect’.

The best way to prepare for death is by good living.  Our Lord is emphasising that in today’s Gospel.  He’s telling us to prepare for death in life’s everyday situations.  He appears to be warning us only of the future.  In fact he’s inviting us to make the most of the present.  We don’t prepare for death by saying, ‘It’s going to be coming anytime, I’d better keep my head down’.  How else do we prepare for death except by responding to present situations, and by developing a pattern of life that leaves us ready for anything?  Christ comes into our lives in the sick, the poor, the people with whom we live, the challenge of the commandments, the choices we have to make between good and evil.  ‘God,’ to quote Patrick Kavanagh, ‘is in the bits and pieces of everyday’.  So is preparing for death.  Or as Tyron Edwards put it: ‘A faithful Christian life in this world is the best preparation for the next’.

Prayer of St. Teresa of the Cross

(Edith Stein)

God is there in these moments of rest and can give us in a single instant exactly what we need. Then the rest of the day can take its course, under the same effort and strain, perhaps, but in peace.  And when night comes, and you look back over the day and see how fragmentary everything has been, and how much you planned that has gone undone, and all the reasons you have to be embarrassed and ashamed: just take everything exactly as it is, put it in God’s hands and leave it with Him.   Then you will be able to rest in Him - really rest - and start the next day as a new  life.

SACRISTANS’ COLLECTION
