5th Sunday of Easter "I was never able to thank him personally, but we looked into each other's eyes before he was led away". That dramatic encounter was between a 40 year old political prisoner, arbitrarily condemned to death, and another man who volunteered to die in his place. Francizek Gajowniczek has now more than double his years of earthly life since that fateful day at Auschwitz in July 1941. The other man, Fr. Maximilian K olbe, died two weeks later in his 47th year, but not in vain. In October
1982, 150,000 worshipers gathered in Piazza of St. Peter's to witness Pope
John Paul II (who says that his own vocation was inspired by Fr. Kolbe)
pronounce his fellow country man a canonized saint of the Church.
"Greater love has no man than this," said the Pope, "that a man lay down
his life for his friends". He was reading from the Gospel of John
the words of Jesus, who knows all about laying down one's life for one's
friends. |
