Jesus applies love and compassion to a concrete situation

Whenever Jesus was asked a question, he usually challenged the questioner with an answer which was much deeper than the question.  Here too Jesus goes on to describe goodness by telling the story of the Good Samaritan.  The big questions this story forces us to consider are: Who is good?  Who is my neighbour?  How much am I prejudiced against people?  What should I do for a neighbour in trouble?  Have I the right to exclude certain people from my sympathy?  What is my reaction when I meet with unexpected charity?

The bare facts of the story are:

The robbers on the road between Jericho and Jerusalem were probably Jews preying on Jews.

The Priest of the temple and the Levite experts in biblical law had no pity on a wounded brother.

The Jews despised Samaritans and none of Jesus’ listeners would expect a good deed from a Samaritan.

It is only the Samaritan who acts as a compassionate neighbour.  The audience would be shocked that he parted with wine and oil for a wounded Jew.  He uses his donkey to bring the victim to an inn.  He pays two denarii for someone who would despise him in daily life.  He is    prepared to foot the bill for even higher expenses for an unknown          Israelite.  All this only because another human being needed help.
