6th Sunday of Easter

In today's first reading, the Apostiles and elders in Jerusalem sent a letter to the Christians in Syria with these words.  "It has been decided by the Holy Spirit and by ourselves..." The Holy Spirit's presence with the Church is the guarantee that when the Church is open to the spirit it will be guided in all truth.  this requires and attitude of openness, a listening ear and a willingness to discern.  The community of the Church like all its members has its sinful as well as its glorious history.  Not every decision that the Church has made in the past has reflected the promptings of the Spirit of truth.  That is why 'the Church is always in need of reform' is an ancient proverb.  But teh promise of the Lord that the Spirit will always remain with the Church is its source of consolation.
