Mary was entertaining Jesus with her real presence - speaking and listening to the one who loves us most.  Meanwhile, in the clitter-clatter of the kitchen, Martha directed her frenzy at Mary’s stillness - all because of the big dinner, when less would have done.  Christ’s response didn’t  belittle Martha’s work.  He intervened to restrain her from belittling Mary’s task.  Christ wasn’t starved - he had just called to be with friends!

Being too busy to be with each other - or to pray - is being too busy!  On the third day of the expedition, the Indian guide said to the Amazon explorer.  “We cannot move  any further until our souls catch up with our bodies!  Likewise, the spiritual and emotional within us need to catch up, and be integrated, with our eternal activities.  Balance is our challenge!

In the current culture of activity, it is easy to neglect our inner lives - to view Mary as a waste of time - and, being lopsided, to behave like ‘martyred’ Marthas.  We need to be open to intimacy with God in prayer - and with each other in quality time.  When we come to the Lord with loving attention and joyful expectation, seeking first the Kingdom of God, … then everything else will be added.  Henceforth, our inner sisters - the Martha and the Mary - will truly complement each other.

NOTICES

Centenary of Church of the Holy Rosary

The Church of the Holy Rosary was blessed and opened on the 7th October 1901.  Leading up to the centenary this year (D.V.), we will have a Solemn Novena of prayer and thanksgiving conducted by the Redemptorist Fathers of Esker.  On the 7th October we will have a special Mass of thanksgiving to mark the centenary at 6p.m. in the evening.  Archbishop Neary will be with us and a number of priests who served here in former years.   Afterwards we will continue the celebrations with a party.

A book on the history of the parish including the building of the church will be published close to the centenary.  Also the Pastoral Council is preparing a weekend of celebration on the weekend of Sept. 15th & 16th.  This weekend wishes to celebrate the giftedness of the many organisations which work in our parish.  At the moment the stonework on the exterior of the Church is being cleaned.  This will take a few weeks to complete.  The stonework should then have a much cleaner and uniform appearance.

Footprints

I walked the road of sorrow

A road so dark with pain

So lonely, I was certain

My cry for help was in vain

But suddenly around me

Were beams of light, stretched wide;

and then I saw that someone

was walking by my side.

And when I turned to notice

The road which I trod,

I saw two sets of footprints

My own… and those of God.
