Envy and Jealousy

As far back as 500 B.C. the Greek playwright Aeschylus said, “It is in the character of few men, to honour without envy, a friend who has prospered.”  How said it is that we interpret another’s success as our failure.  The envious and jealous person imagines many enemies, but in reality is his or her own worst enemy.

Historians are always amazed that after whole generations have been destroyed because of greed, jealousy, ambition of a power-crazed dictator, somebody else is prepared to begin the whole lunatic cycle all over again!  Have I come to terms with arrogance surging in my own heart too?

The liturgy invites us to sincerely trust those people who are close to us and to rejoice at the good fortunes of others.  If we hope to improve spiritually we must constantly be working to discard the evils within us.  Envy and jealously should be two of the first to go.
