The ministry of John is of vital importance for the Church and world of today.  John is our model of courage in announcing the truth.  He is also our example of perseverance.  Can you relate to these words: ‘I have toiled in vain, I have exhausted myself for nothing’ (Isaiah 49:4)?  As he lay in Herod’s dungeon, John too was discouraged and doubtful.

We, who live in world of increasing indifference to the Gospel, must become again the voice crying in the wilderness.  May God make us like sharpened arrows (Isaiah 49:2) that will pierce apathy, so that people today (as at Pentecost) will be ‘cut to the heart’ and ask ‘what must we do?’

Call.  John’s name means the Lord has shown favour.  He was called from birth to his task.  If God calls, God will provide the necessary grace.  Is God calling people today to mission?  Are people refusing to answer the call because it cuts across personal ambition?  Or do people fear the unknown future, forgetting that God will provide?
