The Forgiving Father

The story of the prodigal son is probably one of the best known parables in the gospels.  As a parable, it has been the subject of many reflections, homilies and it was the inspiration for Rembrandt’s powerful painting “The return of the Prodigal Son”.  In the story the father is a powerful image of a gentle and loving God.  Disregarding our own feelings of guilt and shame, God waits patiently for each of us to “come to our senses”.   Like the prodigal, each of us is aware of our unworthiness but let the mercy of the Father be our hope. Lent presents us with the opportunity to seek out again that loving God who waits patiently for our return.
