A common title for God in the Irish tradition was Rí an Domhnaigh (meaning ‘King of the Sunday’).  But what sort of king?

As our Gospel brings us to that first Good Friday scene, we see it’s a king who remembers.  While a long memory can have a negative twist, what a joy it is to be remembered!  To know that you have a hallowed place in another’s memory is a great blessing.  After all it was what one dying companion asked of Jesus: not a favour, he asked just to be remembered:  ‘Jesus, remember me when you enter into your kingdom’ (Luke 23:42).  The response of Jesus; ‘Today you will be with me in paradise,’ gives more clues about what kind of king we follow:

‘Today’ - a king prompt in responding; ‘with me’ - a king who accompanies; ‘In Paradise’ - a king who rewards, no election promises here!

That is the kind of king we follow.  What kind of service can we follow?  The good thief who stole the biggest prize of all - paradise - gives some clues:

He believed - in the future kingdom. He had hope - that he would enter the kingdom.  He had charity - he rebuked the other jeering criminal.

Faith, hope and charity - the three gifts a subject can give to this King.
