When anyone starts looking back, it’s only a question of time until one goes back.  The familiar blanket of routine, known faces, situations and surroundings can have a powerful pull for people in times of crisis.  Far away fields may be green, but they’re also frightening.  We all look back, to when the weather was better, churches were fuller, people were poorer (but content?)

Whether Peter knew it or not; by sailing into yesterday, he was saying that he couldn’t or wouldn’t accept what today had to offer.  It was no casual night’s fishing he was after.  Peter was returning to the way he lived life before he met Jesus.  Looking back is tempting, even understandable - but it’s not the faithful way.  Christ calls a believer forward.

The great Leonardo da Vinci, after mulling over a large canvas, outlining and putting foundation colours upon it, handed it over to one of his students for completion.  The stunned novice artist protested that he was not able or worthy to complete what the great painter had begun.  Da Vinci replied, ‘will not what I have done inspire you to do your best?’

Jesus would agree and say to us: `feed my lambs, feed my sheep.’

De La Salle Commemoration

On the 20th May there will be a day of Commemoration for the De La Salle Brothers in the parish.  A number of the Brothers who worked here will be back for the day as will past pupils including priests.  The 12.30p.m. Sunday Mass that day will be a concelebrated Mass with Archbishop Neary as chief celebrant.

Afterwards the following events will take place:

*Unveiling & blessing of a monument at Chapel St., 1.30p.m.

*Unveiling plaque at St. Patrick’s Boys School, Chapel St., 2p.m.

*Unveiling plaque at St. Gerald’s College, Newport Rd., 2.30p.m.

*Official naming & blessing of the De La Salle Sports Field, 3.30p.m.

The dedication of the De La Salle Brothers over the past 112 years deserves such fitting and lasting memorials.  The monument commissioned, will enhance the architectural streetscape of Chapel Street, and the all weather floodlit sports ground in conjunction with the De La Salle Sports Hall will serve future generations of our youth.

The costs of the whole day including the monument in Chapel St. will be in the region of £100,000.  The Parish Finance Committee have agreed that the proceeds of next Sunday’s Church Collection will go towards defraying these costs.  It will be an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for the dedicated work of the Brothers in Castlebar over 112 years.
