Autumn Chestnuts in Castlebar

The large chestnut near the Rock Square corner of the Mall.

This is the finest specimen of a chestnut tree in Castlebar. It's on Spencer Park at the Curragh end. Quite likely that this wil be chopped down any day now in the interests of progress. Another three acres of Spencer Park are due to go under 'development' very shortly. Soon there will be no green spaces in the the town centre.

Autumn leaves
- the wonderful song by Johnny Mercer

The falling leaves Drift by the window The autumn leaves of red and gold. I see your lips, The summer kisses. The sunburned hands I used to hold. Since you went away The days grow long, And soon I'll hear old winter's song. But I miss you most of all, my darling, When autumn leaves start to fall.

One of the three remaining chestnuts on Spencer Park.
