About the Shiels family . . I think they lived in Castlebar from the mid-1940s to the early 1950s. The old dispensary was a very Dickensian place and the doctor used a Bunsen burner with a narrow blue flame to sterilise the needles. Like the old County Home, the dispensary went back to the famine times, 1840s. Poor times in Castlebar. Much poverty and lots of emigration. The town is now a much better place in which to live. I am sure there are few of Aiden Shiels' pals who remember him from those days, not so many, however.
