I can't give a precise answer to Quiz Man as to when the Public Toilets in Castlebar were knocked. But I can recall a funny story,which is
allegedly true about when it was proposed by the local council to build them. I'd venture to say the year was 1937 or 1938 maybe.
A council member after a heated discussion on building a public urinal in Castlebar expressed his disgust and frustration when he said he was sick and tired of men pissing in the alleyways
particularly on fair days. So he proposed that a public urinal be built. In seconding the proposal William Irwin said that it was an excellent idea and that while we were about it we should also build an arsenal.
