You ask how did destitute people get to Canada at the time of the Great famine. Some landlords assisted or paid in full the passage for many of their tenants. In some cases this was done out of a sense of charity; in others it was a means of clearing their lands of what they viewed as a costly burden. I dont know if any landlord in the Laherdaun area participated in any such scheme.
