As an American of Irish descent - on all sides - I can say it was devasting for those of us here. His election had really symbolized that the Irish (particularly Irish Catholics, as that was the "second class" group here in the US) had finally made it after 100 years of trying. Especially after all of the anti-Catholic rhetoric during the election. His death was truly horrific.

I was in 9th grade and at lunch in our school cafeteria when it was announced by Father Wilfred, one of the Franciscan friars who ran our school. Everything here shut down, stores, movies (films), etc.
