This is one of the great unanswered questions of our time.

The other one that struck me last Sunday was the following:

Why do Irish people refuse to sing at Mass? In Castlebar we really are a painful lot when it comes to singing. There's a really great Gospel Choir but we still don't sing along.

Get us into a pub though and we're loud and raucous as hell! All our wars are merry all our songs are sad but at Mass we don't sing at all at all?

I used to put this down to our oppressed colonial past - you know if you made-too-much-noise-singing-at-the-Mass-Rock=the-priest-would-be-hanged kinda thing. But now that the Celtic Tiger has come and gone we still don't sing at Mass. We even complain in restaurants nowadays for goodness sake. So why don't we sing at mass. Maybe it's the same underlying reason that we don't know when to stand up or sit down?
