That brings back memories. I can remember peering over Mulloy`s bridge, Pa in his waders, the sandbag enclosures and the labourious water pumps. I can`t recall any of the other locals working on that scheme, but some corner of my mind is throwing out a connection between Pa snd "Gaffer" Foy. I think they were buddies but I`m not sure if Gaffer worked on the drainage scheme. I think he died in Australia a few years ago. There is a story that Gaffer was one step ahead of the law and the police arrived on the "dock of Southampton" just in time to see Gaffer wave goodbye minutes after the liner sailed for Australia. You could call it a voluntary deportation. Nice one, even if it`s fiction.
My boating escapade would have been just prior to the drainage scheme.
