S Mary's Hospital Castlebar.
A great book by Joe McDermot about St Mary's Hosp and the treatment of Mental Illness down the years.I've just started reading it,has a lot of local history as well.
"Before the construction of the Castlebar asylum in 1865/66) all Mayo patients were brought to Ballinasloe. This asylum served all Connacht. For a time there was a building on what is now Station Rd,Castlebar, that was used for the incarceration of insane persons. It was known locally as "Mad House Hill"This long rectangular building could house 30-40 people. The building stood just above Spencer Park. Its official name was the "The Bridewell",but locally was known as !The Chatterhouse".Patients from Mayo who were bound for Ballinasloe were held there to await the convenience of the R.I.C. who would transport them to Ballinasloe"
