Which end is considered the "head" of the the lake?? There is an old church ruin and a graveyard in Annagh at the south end of the lake. Logically, this should be the head of the lake as the flow is to the north. However, on the old maps (circa 1838 & pre drainage schemes) the Castlebar cemetery is shown as a small circular burial ground - not a grayeyard - some 300 yards from the start of the river at Lake Lawn. (The entire lake at this time was +3 miles long). The Backfort is almost due west across the lake.
