On July 10, 1976, a chemical explosion occured at Seveso (near Milan), Italy, which released a huge dioxin cloud over the town and district. Result - dead birds, dead animals and people vomiting, with diarrhea, headaches, skin sores etc. Two weeks later plant officials called for the evacuation of the contaminated area. No decontamination was possible. Potential long term effects which should be apparent by now include leukemia, liver and kidney damage, heart problems and nerve disorders.
