And don't forget the smell of porter issuing
from every pub door. Porter was delivered in
wooden barrels before the antiseptic aluminum
barrels became common. I have faint memories
of horse drawn drays delivering porter barrels.
The men were in the public bar or snug. The
women, if there were any, would be in the lounge,
possibly drinking sherry but usually nothing
much stronger.
