I think it ended in the late 60`s but the remnants of the plant are still visible (a blight) at Purteen harbour.
As I understand it the shark was coralled into Keem Bay by fisherman in currachs. This was possible as the shark swims very close to the surface while feeding. The shark was then slaughtered in Keem and the carcass was towed in the water over to Purteen for processing. I think fish oil was the valuable product?
They can be seen off all Irish coasts during summer months. A few years ago at Wicklow Harbour a swimmer swam to what he took to be an electricity pole in the water to discover he was trying to hold on to something more alive than an ESB pole. Lucky for him they are harmless creatures, but I`m sure your man did`nt wait to get ashore to spend a penny!
I have`nt heard of any spotted around your parts Murrisk.
