I never remember basking sharks in the
Murrisk - Old Head area. Murrisk now resides on
the west coast of Canada where eco-tourism and
whale watching (Orcas, grey and hump backed)
generates significant revenues. Any possibility
doing this with the basking sharks - they are
large and placid tempered (?) The Mayo News of
September 1, 1951, recorded that 100 men were
engaged in the 16 week shark fishing season. Wages
were estimated at 300 pounds per man for the season.
Five companies were in operation. One company
processed 50 tons of shark oil valued at 80 to
90 pounds per ton. The math seems odd. The
carcasses were sold to manufacturers of fish meal.
Do you know who these manufacturers were?
