Out by Mullchrones there, out the Newport Rd, there is a narrow boireen fenced in on either side by huge hedges giving way maybe a mile or so to a rutted path which in turn leads to a open landscape, quarry like, with humocks and gorse(Whin?) bushes at the edge of a very fast flowing body of water maybe a hundred yards long and twenty five yards wide bank to bank. "The Cut" ,the canal between the two lakes. here Noel and I would camp out. Gazing enviously at the Inland fisheries boat moored on the Westport Rd side but wisely not daring to test the treacherous current. I believe the current flowed left to right as we looked over to the Westport rd side?
