December 12, 2001, marked 100 years since the first wireless signal was received by Marconi at Signal Hill, Newfoundland, Canada. With backing from the then Canadain Prime Minister, Sir. Wilfrid Laurier, Marconi established a powerfull transmitter/ receiver station at Glace Bay in Cape Breton. This station was capable of generating in excess of 20,000 volts and emitting an electromagnetic pulse with a wave length of approximately 1 mile. Marconi married Beatrice Bourke a daughter of Lord Inchiquinn.

The gaelic language newspapers of Newfoundland, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick struggled to find a gaelic word to describe Marconi's invention. They eventually agreed on the phrase "cogar sa aer" or 'whisper in the air' to describe the process. Quite appropriate.
