Her name was Mai Ford and was a member of an old Castlebar family which is still in the town. She was in the sme peer group as my granny R.I.P. born c. 1888. She lived in the Newantrim St. area and later on Newline.
After acquiring a kind of half length fur coat her call name became COWCABBAGE, PORTER BELLY.
My memories are of being wallopped by her with a broken umbrella in the doorway of Kevin Collins`s music shop in Casle St. and she frequently erupted into loud snoring while relaxing in Fr. Nohilly`s confessional during Mass ( understandable ?)
I also recall her inviting me to sit with her on a mall seat ( after approving my pedigree) and enthralling me with tales of the town and characters and events gone by. God knows what caused her to the temperament and character which we now recall.
