The recent history of this prominent edifice has all the signs of deliberate intent to permit decay and dilapidation thereby arriving at the inevitable conclusion that it`s gone too far and is declared unsafe, so hence the demolition. I am unaware of the status of a planning application ( if any) to develop this site, but it seems to me that in any dev. proposal for this site, the retention of the front facade should have been a condition of any grant of planning permission. While never having been inside I can imagine that the structur was probably cellular and impractical for remodelling.
The retention of existing facades is a regular feature of many current developments. In the late 60s this building was totally replastered externally and reroofed by J.P. McCormack & Sons.
What is happening to the facade of the old Co. Cinema ? If we continue to tear down entire buildings future generations will have no sense of the past built environment.
