I just saw a message posted on the main BB that the old convent which has been recently vandalised and set on fire is being demolished this evening. This is painful for the thousands of girls who were so well educated by the Mercy order in Castlebar. many times I called to the big house and the memories of immaculate marble tiles, the smell of mansion polish and the wonderful statues that adorned the halls.
How sad for the members of the mercy order that their fine home should be reduced to ruin at the hands of young thugs and greedy developers.
Jean mentioned the old chapel and also there was the litte graveyard, so much of the history of education of Castlebar is reduced to rubble.
To any of the past or present Mercy community who may be looking in tonight may I say thank you and most of your PP's would not have wished for this.
