My sister Erin O'Brien traveled to Murrisk in 1968. My father told her before she went that his mom who died in '48 was born near Westport, that her maiden name was Needham and that her brother was a postman. I'm afraid it was all he knew. Erin was unsteady about the task but was befriended by some energetic English vacationers (of all things) and, with their help, found her way to Owen Campbell. Owen introduced her to Michael Needham, the postman in Murrisk since 1901. Owen explained that Michael had the celebrity of being the man that had walked around the world because of the distance he traveled every day on his route. Erin gingerly offered to Michael that her grandmother might be his sister. Without missing a beat, Michael said, "And how is she now?" Erin sadly explained that she had been dead for twenty years. Michael told her that they had heard she married a fella named O'Brien. That fella was my grandfather.
