The river follows the low ground between Main street and Chapel Street. Even Linenhall Street is higher than the river course and Staball is behind it. I don't think there is any way the river could have flowed through the low ground between the barracks and Main Street. In order to do this the river flow would have had to cross the high ground which extends from Main Street to the Westport road. If there ever was water flow in the low ground between the barracks and Main Street it probably came from Saleen. As unlikely as this may seem, before the Moy drainage in the 1960's/70's, Saleen used to flood into the Curragh towards the tennis pavilion, behind St.Marys. In bygone years, before the Mental Hospital river was deepened (1800's), this flow could have spilled through the Mall and into Castle Street.
