If the river was diverted would the stream that flows from the pontoon road, across from the sacred heart home have been filled in. This stream flows into the river at the back of tucker street, behind rockys if I remember rightly. If the river had been diverted then where would this stream have been. Is it possible that this stream was always along the route of the current river, possibly bridged at the main street hence the reference to the bridge crossing of 1798, and the "newer section" of the river joined from Tescos to this point. If not then this stream would have had to flow through the car park (Kyte) and entered into the river at Cavendish lane which would have been filled in and surely with the amount of traffic in the town would have subsided in recent years. As the stream flows under tucker street it is obviously an old route as the buildings in the area are built over this stream.
