In October, on the main BB, there was an interesting discussion as to whether the correct name is Mall or Green.
The tree lined walk from Rock Square to the point opposite Christ Church was called the Mall. The remainder of the
area was called the Green. There is a lovely photo posted on October 13, 2000, on the main BB which shows the Mall
in all its beauty. Incidentally, the dressed stone building on the right hand side of the photo used to be a school
presumably for the military, Church of Ireland and Methodist groups in Castlebar. (There was a separate National
School beside the R.C. Chapel on Upper Chapel Street). I remember this building being used as a school of boxing
in the late 60's-early 70's. According to Tom (main BB Oct 16) the name plate that used be on the courthouse wall
read An Faiche which translates to The Green. The same word is used to describe St. Stephan's Green in Dublin.
