When was the last official hanging in Castlebar?
People were hanged in Castlebar in 1798. Were
any hanged during the Fenian times or the land
wars? I can well image the spine chilling affect
of "no home work done" and the trepidation of facing
the gentle teaching ways of the inspired! I think
cobble stones would have been the choice of paving
material well into the 20th century and I think you
would find cobble stones under the tar macadam on
most of the streets in Castlebar. Poor old Francie
Philbin was a sad case. Some said he was damaged
in WW1. Others told me that he received a very
bad beating during the Tan war. I took a photo in
in 1963 of who I thought was Powie Roach, but my
brother thinks it is Francie Philbin. I will post
it and you tell me who the fellow is.
