Just came across an old message re the location of the Castlebar racecourse - I do know there's a monument up near the railway line on Cottage Road with a carved figurine like a horses head which I'd heard once marked the start of a horse race but I understod this to be Brownes racecourse - There was also, up to the time of the 1996 Breaffy House Extension, a wall alongside the stream feeding the millpond on the Castlebar side of the pond which was supposedly one of the hurdles/highjumps on the old racecourse. I also have a vague memory of reading an account somewhere of an actual Brownes Race Meeting - If I remember where I'll try to reproduce it.
