Believe it or not I was a regular visitor there!
Most Sundays I went out with Paddy Mellett to the track where the up and coming Jackie Stewarts of their time, tried to beat the clock and each other.
Those involved included, among others, Paddy Mellet, Ned Mc Greal, Henry Downs, Fintan Russell (worked in Foster Finance, had an office in Heverin's Ellison Street, and was a brother of Paul Russell of the Showband Show on TV), Bill and Eamonn Whelan from Blackfort, and a host of others.
Sometimes they would practice on the Mall to check if their karts were going well.
They also held a major go karting race around the streets of Castlebar on one Sunday. The track was from the courthouse, around the Mall to Ellison Street, then a very sharp right down Castle Street. All the streets were closed off and they had bales of straw at the corners. Lack of interest in the end. led to the demise of the sport there I think, what a pity.
There should be photos of the track and participants around, as well as photos of the major Sunday race.
