Beehive hairdoo's; girls/ladies in dresses; boys/men in suit and tie or sportscoat; no jeans; tight pants, winklepickers; polished shoes; kiss curls; started with short hair but became shaggy around 1965; Brylcream; occasional small patches of white paper covering shaving wounds; pungent perfume and aftershave like Old Spice; long lines of cars parked on both sides of the road from Church Hill to well past St. Patrick's Avenue; complaints from the hospital authorities about the level of disturbance to hospital patients; complaints that ambulances couldn't get through to the hospital; gardaí in dark blue clothing with flashlights (pre-reflective clothing); steaming bodies exiting the TF; gaggles of lovelies outside Philbins waiting for the bus to Westport; reports of up to 5,000 people at the dances (= the population of the town!); new friends to be made if you had a big umbrella and it was raining which it often was;lots of rough shouting "Mike/Jim/Pat/Joe where are ya/"; rarely any coarse language or fighting; and lots of people on bicycles without lights wobbling home at 2:00, 3:00 and 4:00 A.M. often with a lovely distraction on the cross bar.
