There's holy war going on in Mayo at the moment because every TD in the land is up in arms against the county development plan and council officials who are putting restrictions on people building septic tanks in stupid locations where undoubtedly they will cause problems. Enda Kenny succeeded in getting the minister for the marine to commission and independent report on whether lakeside dwellings were causing pollution or not. the report issued just before the election said that for sure they do cause pollution and shouldn't be allowed. The Connaught Telegraph responds by publishing sob stories about people living in caravans who have been refused planning permission because they want to build at the edge of a lake where their sewage will leach into the water.

Having said that I suspect that most of the drinking water problems in rural areas in Ireland are not due to septic tanks but due to careless disposal of farm wastes. While good farm practice states they must not spread slurry when significant amounts of rain are forecast, you can tell it's going to rain by the rattle of slurry tankers up and down the road. Farmers like a nice bit of rain to "wash it in" (in other words wash it in to any convenient river, lake or well).
