Dance halls . . . French Hill Hall, Thady Reilly's, Glenisland, Round Tower Ballroom, Turlough, Riverside Ballroom, Clogher, Arcadia, Belcarra, Gaiety Ballroom, Islandeady, Maple Hall, Balla, Beaten Path, Brize; dances were also held in the diningroom of St. Mary's Hospital, upstairs in the Courthouse (you went up the old double stairs to the dancing area. I don't remember this but Billy McLoughlin and the late Dessie Dunne told me they danced in the Courthouse), older folks in Castlebar tell me there were some great "courts" there; Ballyvary Hall, marquees near Celtic Park and the Military Barracks square. And, of course, the Plaza Ballroom in Spencer Street, run by Jim Barrett and the colourful Jackie Elliott, one of Castlebar legends. Pa Higgins lived across the the Plaza and remarked on one occasion: "There was woeful waltzing in the Plaza last night."
