Going further back in time there used be a well on the mall on the corner opposite the old jail and opposite the courthouse. Still visible in some of the old photos of Castlebar. It is quite hard to see but you can just make out the 'wheel' handles that would be turned to pull water. It is positioned on a 'white square' slab of concrete. The actual mechanism used be stored in the sheds behind the convent. Probably long gone now.
