Around this time of year we picked black currants, red currants and, I think, gooseberries in the garden. Seated on a chair or stool with a basin or an aluminum milk can between the knees, we picked the fruit on (always) dry sunny days. I hated topping and tailing those fruits but it had to be done before I could go to the lake for a swim. Fond memories of steam billowing through the kitchen window and through the open door when jam was being made.

The old lake was a lot different then than now judging by the Hawk's pictures. The only 'improvements' were the diving board and the wicket gate behind the republican plot yet the whole of Castlebar enjoyed the facility. Nowadays, despite the many 'improvements' the lake seems to be nothing more than a partialy dried up reed bed.
