Does anybody remember the whist drives that were held in the old St. Gerald's college. I think they were held around Christmas time. The partitions were always rolled back to give a large playing area on the second floor. If you and your partner won you moved one way; lost you moved another. There were several older women - no names will be mentioned - who really played hard to win and had no patience with young fellows "who couldn't play cards". If you were stuck with one of them you'd be crucified for the night.
