Do you remember the CIE tour buses going out the Newport Rd. and the tourists returning the waves from the kids ?
Chambers`s in Newport was a stop for many heading for Mulranny and Achill. Great 99s but you could`nt beat Duxie`s ice cream parlour for a Knickerbocker glory served lovingly by Mrs. Stewart. She knew our mothers, fathers, grandmothers, grandfathers. What a lovely lady.
The Great Southern Hotel in Mulranny had the largest saltwater swimming pool in Ireland. A cool way to mix it with the tourists was to thumb to Mulranny, sneak up the back road to the pool area, change in the fuschias and miraculously appear amongst the sunbathers around the pool having their afternoon tea. The springboard, the highboard, the slide. Butch, when you are a great philanthropist will you rebuild the Great Southern and the pool just like it was.
