The Franco Irish Army 'slept' the night of 7th September 1798 in the graveyard of Cloone some 5 odd miles from Ballinamuck - Some would say their choice of sleeping quarters was ironic. Thomas Flanigan describes a fictional, yet probably accurate incident in Cloone in which Humbert approaches an Irish officer who he catches watching him; 'Your Irish here were useless' Humbert says in a grating angry voice. 'Worse than useless. They have dragged me down into this dark bog. They will deserve what happens to them' | |||||
