Bartholomew Teeling

This monument was erected in 1898 to commemorate the heroic action of Bartholomew Teeling in the Battle of Carraig na gCat in 1798.

At this place, the Franco-Irish army under General Humbert was confronted by a heavily armed English Force. An English cannon mounted on this spot was wreaking havoc in the Iris-French ranks. Teeling, a native of County Antrim, rose through the enemy lines, charged up the hill and shot dead the gunner. This brave and noble deed turned the tide and the English were routed.

Despite intense fighting valour, the French-Irish army were defeated at Ballinamuck, Co. Longford. After the battle the French were granted prisoner of war status, but over 500 Irish soldiers were slaughtered. Teeling, despite being a French Officer was later hanged in Dublin. He and his comrades share an honoured place with out patriot dead. They, like their successors, the Fenians, The Invincibles, The men and women of the Tan Wars and those who have died fighting English Oppression to this day, have given their lives for the liberty of Ireland and the ideals of Irish Republicanism.
