Castlebar's Market Square Improvements November 2000

On November 8th Castlebar UDC begin the redesign of Market Square, Castlebar. This will include increased area for pedestrians with trees and hard landscaping plus a new piece of public art. This will raise the Square's profile as a civic centre for the town of Castlebar. John Condon, Town Clerk for Castlebar, admits that there will be some inconvenience during the construction phase. Initially in November, the work will comprise pipe-laying and ducting to take care of underground facilities before the extensive paving gets under way. Christmas trading will, however, take priority in the lead up to Christmas when work will be suspended in December. Then in January the extensive new paving works will commence. To minimise disruption much of the work will be done outside peak hours or at night.

There will be important changes in traffic flow through the Market Square. There will be one-way traffic only from Market Square towards Dunnes Stores - i.e. it will no longer be possible to access Market Square from the Dunnes Stores / Aldi / Tesco direction. Traffic entering the Square from Duke Street will no longer be able to turn right into Shamble Street. Signs will be in place to warn motorists of the new traffic flow patterns.
