River Moy

Due to heavy rain during the week, water levels were high and a big number of fish moved upstream. Good fishing was reported in most fisheries with the majority of the fish taken on the worm.

529 salmon were reported.

The best fish was landed by Micksie Clarke, Bohola, weighing 18 lbs. Kurt Vieth, Germany, had one fish weighing 14 lbs. Larry Taffe, Callow, also had a fish weighing 14 lbs. Wilfie Zoppine had 3 fish weighing 11¹/₂ lbs, 6¹/₄ and 2¹/₂ lbs. Roy Howell, England, had 5 grilse with the average weighing 4 lbs.

John Healy, Toomore, Foxford, had 4 grilse. Total weight 22 lbs. Michael Halligan, Castlebar, caught 8 grilse for two days weighing between 3 and 6 lbs.

Ed Boller, Switzerland, had 10 fish for the week with a total weight of 58 lbs with his best fish for 11 lbs. Madeline Exley, England, had her first ever salmon, an unforgettable fish weighing 4 lbs. Mr K. Billingham and Mr A Parker had 14 fish for the week with the best at 12¹/₂ lbs and 9¹/₂ lbs with ten of these were released.

Lough Conn

Fishing was very poor all week mainly because of the bright sunshine together with cold northerly winds and very little fly on the water. Not many anglers ventured out. The few fish that were caught were mainly in the calm bays around Poteen Island and were taken on dry flies. 85 trout reported

John Nicholson, Southampton, caught 6 trout for the week with his best fish weighing 2¹/₂ lbs. Gerry Beard, Rochdale, had 10 trout, best fish 1¹/₄ lbs for the same period. Professor George Kane, London, had 15 trout weighing 16³/₄ lbs, best 2¹/₂lbs and 4 grilse weighing 12¹/₂ lbs. This was over a two week period. Tommy Wallace, a regular visitor to Pontoon Bridge Hotel, now in his hundredth year, had 1 grilse weighing 4 lbs and 4 trout, best 3 lbs.

The Connaught Championship was hosted by Lough Conn and Cullin Anglers' on Sunday. 72 anglers caught 31 fish weighing 35.66 lbs.

In first place was Shannon Clements, Sligo, with 3 fish weighing 4.54 lbs. Coming in second was F. McMorrow Jnr, Sligo, with 2 fish weighing 3.04 lbs. In third place was L McCarthy, Galway, with 2 fish weighing 2.99 lbs. F. McMorrow Jnr, had the heaviest fish weighing 2.06 lbs.

Bilberry

This fishery has been stocked recently with brown trout average weight 1¹/₄ lbs. Boats can be hired from Mrs McGrath at 094-23329. There is a six fish limit and, it is strictly fly only. At a recent Club Competition fished from 6 to 10 o'clock, 21 fish were caught. The winner was Seamus O'Grady, Westport, with 3 fish weighing

4.09 lbs. In second place was Christy Murphy, Castlebar, with 3 fish weighing

3.39 lbs and in third place Billy McDonnell, Islandeady, with 3 fish weighing 3.17lbs. The heaviest fish was caught by Ray Barrett, Islandeady, weighing 1.79 lbs.

Ballin Lough

Fair weather conditions with a northerly wind. The general state of fishing was good with most anglers enjoying good fishing. 88 rainbow trout were taken weighing 200 lbs in 29 rod days. Mr Pesch landed the heaviest fish for 5 lbs with 11 trout in his bag for 32 lbs. Gerard Kelly, Drogheda, had 8 trout weighing 18 lbs on a Green Peter.

Burrishoole Fishery

High tides together with heavy rainfall raised the level of the lake, general state of fishing very good with most boats having one to two fish and a lot of fish hooked and lost. 31 salmon weighing 139¹/₂ lbs were taken in 80 rod days. Martin Rowland with the best fish weighing 12¹/₄ lbs. Best bay by Cyril Proctor, England, with 8 fish weighing on average 5 lbs. 23 sea trout weighing 40 lbs were taken in 80 rod days with the best fish by Dr Ken Whelan weighing 3 lbs. Most successful salmon flies were Ally Shrimp, Hairy Mary, Kate McLaren, Bibio and Green Peter and for sea trout Claret Bumble, Delphi and Bibio.

Lough Beltra and Newport River

3 salmon on lake with 4 salmon on river

Pat McDermot had one fish for 12 lbs on the river. Also on the river Dr Cahill, Cork, had a 12 lbs fish. Peter Nolens landed one fish for 7lbs. Danielle Chisalberti had one fish for 4¹/₂ lbs.

Ballisodare River

Approximately, 100 salmon caught for the week.
